Keith Haring

Kieth Haring is one of the few artists who's work has the ability to move me in so many different ways. It's not often you effectively grow up with an icon and when I was at art college that's effectively what he was. As regular readers will know I'm a great fan of simplicity and his work epitomises the idea that it shouldn't take much to make a statement. Love, energy, sorrow, humour, joy - his work has everything.

His work is as fresh and relevant today as it was at the height of his fame three decades ago. Since his untimely death in 1990 (age 31) Haring has been the subject of several international retrospectives and his work continues to be seen in the exhibitions and collections of major museums around the world. In 2009 I was lucky enough to visit the Tate Modern exhibition - Pop Life: Art in a Material World - as a graphic designer it's without doubt the most inspiring exhibition I have ever attended.

This brilliant CBS Evening News item from 1982 shows his journey from subway graffiti artist to the toast of the NYC art scene.
